Frequently Asked Questions

What are the most efficient heating and cooling system available in the market place?

Governmental agencies like the EPA and Department of Energy, consumer and industry groups, and geothermal system owners all agree: geothermal heating and cooling is considered the world's greenest and most energy-efficient option.

How efficient are geothermal systems?

Geothermal Systems use the earth's thermal properties in conjunction with electricity to provide unmatched efficiency. For every unit of electricity the system uses, it provides three to four units of heating energy - an efficiency of 300% to 500%.

Does a geothermal system take up more space than a furnace and A/C unit?

No, a geothermal heat pump utilizes approximately the same amount of space as a furnace does and there is no equipment outside.

Are geothermal systems expensive?

The interior costs are approximately the same cost as a conventional gas furnace and air conditioning system. The additional cost for the exterior ground heat exchanger can be bought outright if desired or can be utilized by TerraSource with a monthly loop access fee. See Utility Services – TerraSource

How long does a geothermal system last?

Geothermal units are amongst the longest lasting heating and cooling equipment systems on the market, lasting up to twenty five years. Equipment longevity will vary with each installation.

How noisy are geothermal systems?

Geothermal systems eliminate the need for any outdoor equipment. This results in substantially reduced noise levels around your home.

Does it take more electricity to run a geothermal system?

Installing a geothermal system completely eliminates the need for natural gas. However, electricity is required to operate the heat pump. The net result is less energy usage (electricity and natural gas combined) when compared to conventional gas systems.

Does each home have its own loops or are loops shared with others?

Typically in residential applications, each home their own unique ground loop.

How long do geothermal loops last?

Geothermal loops and fittings are guaranteed by the manufacturer for between 50 -55 years.

Is it better to buy out the geo loops or use the utility option?

When using the utility option, you eliminate any risk associated with the ownership of the exterior loop field as TerraSource, the utility provider is responsible for all repair and maintenance for a minimum of 25 years.

How often should I have maintenance done on my heating and cooling system?

You should have maintenance done on your system a minimum of once per year, two times is preferable. With any system or appliance, this not only ensures maximum efficiency, it enables us to foresee any possible problems that may occur in the near future. Our service plans are specifically designed for your system type to keep your equipment running at peak performance.
